Terms of service
The short version: we give you information and help you ask for your money. We never hold it, manage it, advise you on it, or act for you. You stay in charge of your accounts.
Updated October 27, 2026. These terms are an agreement between you and Stressline Inc ("we"), which runs Attovar. By using Attovar or paying for a service, you agree to them.
1. What Attovar is
Attovar is an information service. We search public annual reports (Form 5500) that retirement plans file with the U.S. Department of Labor, and we show where a plan's money went. The search, the report, the request letter, the deadline tracker and a second-request letter are free.
2. What we are not
- We are not a fiduciary. We do not manage, hold, control or invest any plan, account or money, and we are not a fiduciary under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) or any other law. We are not your trustee or agent.
- We are not your representative. We do not contact plans, employers, recordkeepers or agencies on your behalf, sign for you, or file claims for you. You sign every letter yourself and you are its sender. If you choose "We mail it for you", you approve the final letter and sign it electronically by typing a code we email you, and we only print and mail it, unchanged, in your name. We never write to a plan in our own name or speak for you.
- We do not handle your money. If a plan pays you anything, it goes from the plan straight to you. We never receive it and never take a share of it.
- We do not give legal, tax or investment advice. We are not a law firm, and using Attovar does not create an attorney-client relationship. Ask a lawyer, tax professional or financial adviser about your own situation.
- We are not connected to any plan, employer, recordkeeper or government agency, including the Department of Labor, the IRS and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.
3. The free service
Every fact in a report comes from a public filing, and the report links to it. Public filings can be late, wrong or incomplete, and a name match can point to the wrong plan, so check what we show before you rely on it. Estimates of what you might find are rough ranges from plan-wide numbers, not your balance. When we point to money that may be there, it is a reason to ask the plan, not a statement that anything is owed. Only the plan can tell you that.
4. Case manager ($79, flat fee)
What we do, for 6 months from the day you pay or until your case is resolved, whichever comes first:
- A person checks your match within 2 business days: the right plan, who holds it now, and the administrator's address.
- We prepare a ready-to-sign letter for every place your money could be: the plan, its recordkeepers, and the IRA providers that take small balances.
- When a reply comes, you send us a copy with the numbers blacked out. Within 2 business days we tell you what it means and what to do next.
- We draft the letters that need judgment: a formal claim (sent after a "no account" reply or silence, so it can answer what the plan said), an appeal, a search under a mismatched record, and letters to IRA providers or insurers. If a plan still does not answer after about 45 days, we help you bring in the Department of Labor's Benefits Advisors.
- We track the legal deadlines and remind you.
What you do: fill in your own details, sign, and mail each letter. Never send us a Social Security number, date of birth or account number; black them out of anything you share.
Harder cases (several employers, layoffs that may have vested your employer money, pensions moved to insurers, abandoned plans) have a higher flat fee, shown before you pay. Estate screens for law firms are priced and described separately at checkout.
5. Fees and refunds
- Fees are flat and paid in advance through Stripe. We never charge a percentage of what you recover, and we never pay or take referral fees.
- Refund if we find nothing new. If, within 6 months of paying, we have not found any plan, transfer, holder or deadline you did not already know about, email us and we refund the full fee.
- If you change your mind before we start work, email us and we refund the full fee.
- Letters we mail for you are a separate flat fee per letter, shown before you pay. It covers printing, USPS Certified Mail and tracking. If we can't mail it, we refund it in full. Once a letter is mailed, the fee covers that mailing and isn't refundable, whatever the plan answers. Only records requests and simple follow-ups can be mailed this way; claims, appeals and anything asking for personal identifiers are signed in ink and mailed by you.
6. No promise of a result
We cannot promise that money exists, that a plan will answer, how long it will take, or how much you will receive. Plans, recordkeepers and courts make those decisions, not us.
7. Your part
- Give accurate information, and only search for yourself or someone you are authorized to act for (for example, as an executor, or as the attorney for an estate).
- Do not use Attovar to look up other people without their permission, to copy or scrape the site in bulk, or for any unlawful purpose. Claiming money that is not yours, or using someone else's identity, is fraud.
- You are responsible for what you sign. Our letters leave blanks for facts only you know, such as your dates of work. Fill them in yourself, and sign only if everything in the letter is true. If you are not sure of a date, write "about" or leave it out.
- We never prepare sworn statements. We do not draft affidavits or anything signed under penalty of perjury. If a plan or court sends you one, sign it only if you know every statement in it is true, and ask a lawyer if you are unsure.
8. Privacy and learning
Our privacy page explains what we keep. Email us with your report link and we will delete it. We record how each case turns out (for example "found at an IRA provider" or "no answer after 30 days"), without your name or contact details, to make results better for the next person. Email us to leave your case out.
9. Limits of our responsibility
Attovar is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law allows. We are not responsible for indirect or consequential losses, including lost benefits, taxes, penalties or missed deadlines. If we are responsible for a loss, the most we will pay is what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Some places do not allow these limits, so they may not apply to you.
10. Disputes
Ohio law governs these terms. Please email us first; most problems can be fixed quickly. Otherwise, disputes go to the state or federal courts in Ohio, and either of us may use small claims court.
11. Changes
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version. A paid service is covered by the terms in effect on the day you paid.
